About Goathland Nature
We are a community of people with an interest in the conservation and restoration of our local nature. We engage in activities to educate ourselves and others in understanding and appreciating the natural world; record and monitor fauna and flora; and work in partnership with other groups and stakeholders to support biodiversity in local nature. Our geographical focus is the parish of Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors.
Objectives
Our specific objectives are:
- to promote the conservation and study of local nature,
- to educate ourselves, other residents and visitors in the understanding and appreciation of local nature,
- to record local nature,
- to identify challenges to and changes to local nature,
- to work in partnership with other groups and stakeholders to support and sustain biodiversity in local nature,
- to help conserve, enhance and manage the local environment for the benefit of present and future generations. It is commonly accepted that the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. The State of Nature 2023 biodiversity report, produced by over 60 UK conservation groups, documents the stark decline of many types of animals, birds, plants, insects, bees, butterflies and other organisms that give our British countryside the special character we cherish.
Closer to home, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust published a 2024 report outlining the current State of Yorkshire’s Nature identifying 3000 species at risk of extinction, 1 in 5 species having declined 25% in the last 30 years. Unfortunately, it is clear that common species are increasing at the expense of rare species.
Goathland Nature Group is acting to help local nature recovery through education, observation and collaboration. Will you help us to help nature?
