Nestled within the sweeping landscapes of the North York Moors, Goathland is home to a rich and diverse tapestry of wildlife shaped by moorland, ancient woodland, hedgerows, and flowing beck valleys. From red grouse calling across the heather to tawny owls moving silently through twilight woodland, the area supports an extraordinary range of species adapted to this unique upland environment.
The mosaic of habitats surrounding Goathland, including heathland, mixed woodland, farmland edges, and freshwater ecosystems, provides sanctuary for mammals such as roe deer, foxes, hedgehogs, and bats, alongside a remarkable variety of birds, insects, and plant life. Seasonal changes bring constant transformation, whether it is migrating birds arriving in spring, butterflies emerging across wildflower meadows in summer, or fungi quietly appearing beneath autumn canopies.
Conservation plays a vital role in protecting these fragile ecosystems. Sensitive land management, habitat restoration, and community engagement help maintain biodiversity while ensuring that wildlife can continue to thrive alongside local residents and visitors. By observing responsibly, recording sightings, and supporting conservation initiatives, we can better understand the natural rhythms of the moors and contribute to safeguarding them for future generations.

We are now about half way through the 2026 bat survey across Goathland Parish. You will recall that we have been loaned two bat sound recorders from the North York Moors National Park. We have so far undertaken 16 surveys in different properties around the Parish. Read more…
iNaturalist Journal: Bracken by Gary
Bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) is one of the world’s most successful and ancient plants, with fossil records extending back over 55 million years. In the North York Moors National Park bracken covers about 20% of the moorland, increasing by 1% a year.
