Goathland Nature iNaturalist Project
We have decided to use the iNaturalist app to record the nature seen in and around Goathland, North Yorkshire.
An iNaturalist observation records an encounter with an individual organism at a particular time and location. Every observation will contribute to our understanding of nature in Goathland. It will also contribute to the wider science community as findings can be shared with scientific databases in the UK. All you have to do is observe!
How do I use iNaturalist?
You will need an iNaturalist account to post any observations to iNaturalist. These are free to create and to use. An iNaturalist account can be created on either a mobile app or on the iNaturalist website.
Once you have an account you can add any plant or animal observations you make around our Parish!
When you are out and about in our beautiful countryside it is easy to make an observation with your phone, simply follow these steps to get you started:
- Open the iNaturalist App or visit the iNaturalist website.
- Tap on the green button with the + sign in the lower right-hand corner.
- Add one or more photos or sounds as evidence.
- Choose an identification for what you saw by getting a suggestion.
- Documenting where and when you saw it should be added automatically.
- Save your observation.
- Syncing to the Goathland Parish Location will happen automatically.
- Check back for activity on your observation from the community or be notified by email.
Join our project! We would also like to encourage you to join the Goathland Nature Project.
What is the Goathland Nature iNaturalist Project?
On iNaturalist, a Project is a way to collate and group a set of observations. Each project has its own page, as well as a journal that can be used to communicate with project members.
A Project has been created by Goathland Nature Group with the aim to enjoy, learn about, record and actively support our local nature and wildlife. The geographical focus is the Parish of Goathland within the North York Moors National Park.
Why have you set up the Goathland Parish Project?
We’ve set up the Goathland Nature iNaturalist project to enable us to:
Make observations: Making observations are by far the most important part of iNaturalist. By bringing these observations together we are able to track and display all the observations recorded within the Goathland Parish. A map shows where each observation is made.
Run bioblitzes: A bioblitz is an effort to record as many species as possible within a designated space and/or period of time. We can run bioblitzes and have already run a bioblitz at St Mary’s Church, Goathland and are planning further ones.
Build a community: We aim to cultivate a sense of community within iNaturalist. This happens by encouraging people to add observations and identifications, and also by our regular journal posts. The posts will give an insight into what is going on in nature and what you may see in and around Goathland.
Collate all observations: We have a central project page that displays all the observations made within Goathland Parish. Any observation which can be made by anyone using iNaturalist in our Parish area will be displayed on our page, here:

Reports: We can make reports from this data.
Please enjoy viewing and sharing your experience of nature in Goathland by using iNaturalist.
