Goathland iNaturalist 2025 Report
iNaturalist is a free to use nature observation software we decided to use for our Group. We launched the Goathland Parish Project on iNaturalist in May 2025. This was to help members feel they were contributing to nature observations around Goathland. Data is automatically uploaded to iRecord, who use it for research purposes. I have produced regular journal reports, of my experience of local nature, that were shared with our members. We undertook our first bio blitz in September 2025 in St Mary’s Church, Goathland, North Yorkshire.
There were previous iNaturalist observations made around Goathland, but since launching our project there has been an enormous increase. In 2025 a total of 780 observations (103 in 2024) were made. 493 different species were identified in 2025, up from 83 noted in 2024. 53 people made observations (27 in 2024). They made from 1 to a massive 224 observations each.

Commonest month for observations was in July, and none made in January and February. Plants tend to be the easiest to photograph, so not surprisingly they were the commonest kingdom observed, followed by animals (222) and then fungi (132).
The Comma butterfly was observed the most commonly in Goathland. Such a beautiful insect to see around our Parish.
The aim for the next year ahead is to continue with increased observers to spot more nature in Goathland. We aim to undertake more bio blitzes in the village.
