Goathland Nature Group is delighted to invite you to take part in this year’s Goathland Village Show Photography Competition — a celebration of our Parish’s beautiful waterways and our growing connection with the REConnect Project.
Water shapes Goathland. Nearly half of our Parish boundary is defined by flowing water — from West Beck, Murk Esk, and Eller Beck to the many moorland becks and open channels that thread their way across the landscape. These trickles, currents, and ribbons of water are more than features on a map; they’re living corridors for nature and our local wildlife.

The Beauty of Goathland’s Waterways Section 10, Class 5 — Goathland Village Show
If you live or work within Goathland Parish and would like to take part, simply step outside, explore our local waters, and capture the spirit, movement, and magic that make them so special. All photographs must be taken within Goathland Parish, following the rules and guidelines in the Goathland Village Show leaflet.
Capture the spirit, movement and magic of our waters and you could become the first winner of the Goathland Nature Shield!
PHOTO TIPS
- Think About Composition — Use lines, shapes, and framing to guide the viewer’s eye.
- Capture the Moment — Look for movement, atmosphere, and those fleeting, magical seconds.
- Show Water in Its Environment — Include surrounding habitats to tell a fuller story of place.
- Explore Human Interaction — Bridges, stepping stones, reflections, or everyday encounters can add meaning.
- Highlight Nature in the Water — Plants, insects, birds, and aquatic life reveal the richness of our waterways.
